The Young and the Restless has set yet another record. The soap opera that has been number one for more consecutive weeks than any other show in history now gets listed in The Guinness Book of Records for the daytime program with the most Emmy nominations in a single year. The record-setting total is twenty-one.


Unfortunately for Y&R, it was impossible to capitalize on every one of those nominations. Okay, theoretically it could have happened---but it would have required three-way ties in several categories since the show earned multiple nominations in many categories.


That does not mean that Emmy Night was not a good night for fans of Genoa City drama. In fact, the show earned a very respectable six Emmy wins.


The night started off well when Y&R earned a win for Outstanding Younger Actress in a Drama Series. The win went to Heather Tom (Victoria Newman), who credited her win to lucky "pixie dust" given to her by her sister. Tom went up against castmate Camryn Grimes (Cassie Johnson) in the category.


Also in the acting area, Y&R's Sharon Case (Sharon Newman) earned a win in the Supporting Actress category. Case seemed genuinely surprised by her win. Experts had been predicting that Kelly Ripa (Hayley Vaughan) of All My Children was the frontrunner.


Y&R had hoped to sweep the female acting categories with a win in the Outstanding Leading Actress category. With two nominations, Jeanne Cooper and Melody Scott Thomas, the show's chances were 2-in-5. This year, however, there would be a stunning surprise. After eighteen previous nominations, this was the year for Susan Lucci to finally win her Emmy.


Y&R was also honored for its Outstanding Directing. Prior to the awards telecast, Y&R picked up three other awards in the technical categories.
