Y&R Leads CBS to 45 Daytime Emmy Nominations

If The Young and the Restless was slighted at this year's Soap Opera Digest Awards, it more than compensated for it in Daytime Emmy nominations.
Nominations were announced Wednesday for the 27th Daytime Emmy Awards. The awards, which honor achievement in the 1999 calendar year, will be handed out on Friday, May 19th.
There were several surprises and noteworthy nominations this year. One Life to Live ended the seven-year run of
Days of our Lives as an Outstanding Drama Series nomination.
One Life to Live joins perenially nominees,
All My Children,
General Hospital and
The Young and the Restless in the category. Not since the 1993-1994 Daytime Emmy Awards has another soap broken the AMC-GH-DAYS-Y&R strangle hold on the top category. For the record, in that year the nominees were AMC, Y&R,
As The World Turns, and
Guiding Light.
Though some soaps received more nominations than others --- The Young and the Restless and All My Children were one and two in total nominations --- every eligible soap opera received at least one nomination.
There were no new faces among the Outstanding Leading Actor nominees. All My Children's
David Canary (
Adam and
Stuart Chandler), General Hospital's Anthony Geary (
Luke Spencer), One Life to Live's
Robert S. Woods (
Bo Jack Abbott) and Eric Braden (
Victor Newman) were all nominees in the category last year. Geary was presented with the award in 1999.
Then there were surprises. After winning her very first Daytime Emmy Awards last year,
Susan Lucci found herself off the ballot this year. Her All My Children co-star, Finola Hughes (
Alexandra Devane) did, however earn a nomination. Susan Flannery (
Stephanie Forrester) on
The Bold and the Beautiful picked up a rare nomination for her show in the Leading Actress category. One Life to Live's Hillary B. Smith (
Nora Buchanan), a previous winner in 1993, is also among the field of contenders. Past The Young and the Restless winners Jeanne Cooper (
Katherine Chancellor) and Jess Walton (
Jill Abbott) rounded out the ballot.
The Supporting categories provided more new faces that any other section of the ballot this year.
Among the women, Days of our Lives' Patrika Darbo (Nancy Wesley) earned one of her show's two honors in the Outstanding Supporting Actress category. Days' other nomination went to Jensen Ackles (
Eric Brady) in the Outstanding Younger Actor field.
For the men, many of the faces were familiar. Timothy Gibbs (
Kevin Buchanan) of One Life to Live scored a nomination.
The Young and the Restless once again claimed the vast majority of the Young Performer nods. The show grabbed seven of the eleven nominations in these categories. General Hospital's now-departed Jonathan Jackson (
Lucky Spencer) earned a nod for the young men and The Bold and the Beautiful's Adrienne Frantz (Amber Moore) won a nomination for her character's dramatic childbirth storyline.
