Brief Character History
Psychiatrist Marty Saybrooke moonlighted as a tutor and helped Todd Manning in his college studies. Marty and Manning got caught up in a night of passion but she rejected him the next day. Angry and rejected, Todd led his frat brothers in gang raping Marty. Marty filed charges but at the trial Todd accused Marty of lying but it's revealed that Todd had previously raped another woman. Nora Gannon, Todd's attorney became so angry she caused a mistrial but Marty eventually tricked a confession from Todd and he is sent to jail. Todd escaped just in time to rescue his niece, Jessica Buchanan, Sarah Roberts and Marty after a car crash. His good deed along with the revelation that Todd is a member of a prominent Llanview family led to exoneration. Marty and Todd put their differences to rest and Marty traveled to Ireland to take care of family business.
Marty encountered Patrick Thornhart while in Ireland. He embraced her in a passionate kiss as he hid himself from the Men of 21, a local terrorist group. The two grew close as she allowed Patrick to hide out in her room. They fell in love but Todd Manning had flown to Ireland to take Marty back to the States to care for a former patient. Marty returned to Llanview and Todd remained in Ireland to help Patrick. But when Todd got shot, Patrick used Manning's passport to get to Llanview.
Back in Llanview, Patrick found solace in the arms of Blair but Todd caught them and vowed revenge on Patrick. In his revenge attempt, Todd set up an explosion that killed a man and made Patrick look guilty. Patrick was arrested for murder but later cleared of all charges when a videotape revealed he wasn't in Llanview when the explosion occurred.
Over a period of time, Marty and Patrick reconciled and were in the process of planning their wedding when Mahoney, a terrorist from Ireland, arrived in Llanview. Mahoney believed that Patrick would implicate him in a bombing death in Ireland and tried to kill him. Mahoney's bullet missed Patrick and hit Mel Hayes. Patrick followed Mahoney to Todd's where more shots are exchanged and Mahoney was killed. However, news has it that it is Patrick that was killed. Marty rode with Patrick's body to the hospital and during the ride his body began to stir. Marty didn't reveal the Patrick was alive but instead got him out of the city to recover. Eventually, Marty and Patrick returned to Ireland and sent a note to Bo and Nora telling them of the birth of their baby girl.
Marty returned to Llanview in 2004 stating that she had been working as a psychiatrist in California. Since the majority of her work consisted of providing consultation with sexual offenders, she was asked to provide her expertise opinion on the case of a local man accused of rape. Todd Manning had been accused of rape by Blair Kramer. However, what Blair wasn't aware of was that she had a brain tumor and much of her reality was distorted by her illness. Marty testified that recent events of Todd's past had affected his life so much that he would never rape again.
Marty left the scene but made a brief appearance during Todd's delusional break after his own rape at the hands of Margaret Cochran. Prior to Marty's return in November 2006, her son Cole Thornhart had become a resident of Llanview and a classmate of Starr Manning, daughter of Todd Manning. Feeling pressured to lead his high school team towards a championship, Cole turned to steroids had uncontrollable outbursts of rage. It was a steroid induced outrage that resulted in Cole being charged with attacking Starr at a party. At that point, Marty returned to Llanview to be close to her son (once thought to be a girl) and explained that the source of his problems stemmed from the mysterious death of Patrick Thornhart.
Marty immediately became the lead psychiatric consultant in the case of Dr. Spencer Truman who is accused of murder. Marty's defense of Truman incurred the wrath of Llanview Chief of Detectives, John McBain and Blair and Todd Manning. However, Marty's work with Truman ended when he was murdered at the hospital during an assault on Blair. Later Marty, herself sought therapy after having flashbacks of blood and a scalpel in the hospital room where Truman was murdered.
Overwhelmed by her flashbacks, Marty insists that she has murdered Truman. In the meantime, Marty was stalked by Miles Laurence whom she gently rebuffed while attempting to maintain a cordial friendship. But Laurence would not be easily dismissed. He began following Marty and repeatedly showed up unexpectedly at her door. At one point, he arranged to have her attacked so that he could rescue her and become her hero. However, his efforts were thwarted by John McBain who had recently become Marty's friend. Laurence finally resorted to eavesdropping on her while she was in therapy and orchestrated a theft to obtain the audio taped confession of the murder between Marty and her therapist. He then used the tape to blackmail Marty into marriage. But John McBain detected that something was wrong with Marty's marriage and speculated that Laurence might have damaging information. She finally told John what she believed she had done and her own confession led her to be arrested as a prime suspect in the murder of Spencer Truman. John continued to uncover the facts and eventually found conclusive evidence that led to Lindsay Rappaport as the real murderer.
After being cleared of murder, Marty annulled her marriage to Miles. Marty and John continued their friendship which soon blossomed into love. As Marty shared more details of her past with John, she told him of Simon Ryerson's visit and his news about Patrick's death.
In the Fall of 2007, Cole was abducted from his home and Marty was taken from a hotel room that she and John were sharing. Their abductor was Simon Ryerson, the terrorist that killed Patrick. He was now holding Marty and Cole captive in Ireland. Simon threatened to kill Cole if Marty didn't hand over Patrick's list of names of the Men of 21. Marty was unaware that the list had been hidden on a microchip in a book Patrick had given to her.
John began his search for Marty and Cole at her apartment and found the book with the microchip. He and Lee Ramsey fly to Ireland and contacted Simon with plans to exchange Marty and Cole for the microchip. An impatient Ramsey fired shots into the van holding Marty and Cole and the van rolled down a cliff into a quarry. John raced to the scene and found Marty alive but Cole missing. He struggled to free Marty from the wreckage but she insisted that he first locate Cole. Thrown from the van, Cole is seriously injured but alive. As John returned to rescue Marty the van exploded and Marty was presumed dead. John and Cole returned to Llanview where Cole was taken in by Nora Buchanan. Cole entered grief counseling sessions while his relationship with Starr Manning grew closer.
