Brief Character History
Gordon Middleton was introduced in August 1978 as the very handsome man
who was married to Amanda Wexler, but could not get Amanda to go to his
bed, because of the lies told by her from the woman she and everyone else
thought was her mother, Lucille Wexler. Gordon was also a well known
architect and a very good one and would be consulted by many residents in
and around Springfield and businesses as well.
Amanda had left Gordon on their wedding night because she couldn't bring
herself to consumate the marriage. Originally the reason why Amanda had
done this, as she explained to her new friend, Ben McFarren, was because
her "mother", Lucille had been beaten by a stranger several years earlier
who had broken into the main house at the Wexler estate. By April 1979,
Amanda had developed feelings for Ben, but Ben was married to
Eve Stapleton McFarren, and told Amanda that they could not have any
relationship except a platonic one. Amanda then decided to return to her
estranged husband, Gordon, and finally consumated the marriage. The next
morning, Amanda awoke and realized she'd made a mistake, Amanda then
divorced Gordon. After this Eve would ask Gordon for more of a
clarification as to why Lucille and Amanda seemed to be so odd. Gordon
explained to Eve that Lucille wasn't just beaten on the night the stranger
had broken into the main house at the Wexler estate, but she had been raped!
As fate would have it Gordon wouldn't really feel that lonely for very
long because, Hope Bauer, the daughter of prominent Springfield attorney
Mike Bauer, had just returned from design school in New York City and
Gordon decided to hire her on some of his architectural projects. Then he
started to date Hope and for a brief time they became lovers. Unfortunately, for Gordon this relationship would end soon as well.
One of the projects they were hired to work on was Alan Spaulding's villa
on the island of St. Lucia. Mike Bauer who was investigating the presumed
death of rapist, Roger Thorpe suspected that Alan had flown Roger there
after he had been shot by his wife, Holly Norris Bauer Thorpe after she
had shot him three times in the chest during the height of the rape trial
against Roger for raping Holly during their brief tragic marriage. One
day, Hope and Gordon were puzzled to find an IV unit in the villa and even
more baffled when Alan was secretive about it. Before Hope and Gordon
could pursue this mystery, Gordon learned that his brother had been
seriously injured in a car accident, and he decided to go back to his
family home far from Springfield. Gordon would later learn that Alan and
Hope had crashed in a plane after leaving St. Lucia to try and head to
Puerto Rico, where they would catch a connecting flight to
Springfield. On the deserted island that Hope and Alan would eventually
wash ashore on, they would become lovers and have an affair (despite the
fact that Alan was already married to Jacqueline "Jackie" Scott Marler)
and eventually after Alan's divorce, Hope and Alan would marry.
Gordon was last seen giving advice to his former wife, Amanda, letting
her know that if she was in love with Ben McFarren she should let him know
and they should eventually marry (which Amanda and Ben did.)
