Brief Character History
Ric Lansing was first in seen in November 2002 in a Venezuelan prison cell next to Jason and Carly. A few weeks later he arrived in Port Charles, right around the time Luis Alcazar was murdered. He went to see Sonny and offered his legal services, but Sonny turned him down. Later, Sonny decided to use Ric for odd jobs having to do with the Alcazar murder trial. For most of these jobs, Ric received little gratitude. Ric also befriended Carly and she hired him as her new business manager for her new club. Brenda eventually remembered Ric from her days with Alcazar in South America and that she saw Ric in the hotel the night Alcazar was killed. Ric admitted that he was there but he only saw Alcazar's body and then went to remove anything that might connect him to Alcazar. When Alexis abruptly left town for her daughter's surgery, Sonny had Ric take over Jason and Brenda's defense. Just as the trial was ending, Ric was contacted by the real killer with evidence that proved Jason and Brenda didn't kill Alcazar.
Ric continued to help Carly with her new club, but he also kept pestering Sonny to hire him. Sonny continually turned him down with the exception of more odd jobs but said that he could work for Carly. Carly caught Brenda and Sonny kissing and left her opening night party to drink away her pain at Jake's. Ric followed her and rescued her from Faith Rosco's goon Fowler who had drugged her drink. Ric took Carly to a motel room and Carly woke up naked next to him the following morning, horrified at the idea of having slept with him. She threatened to tell Sonny who would kill him, but decided keeping quiet would be better for her. Ric then used the night as blackmail against Carly, telling her to talk Ric up to Sonny so that Sonny would hire Ric.
A hitman shot up Carly's club and Ric took a bullet while walking near Sonny and Carly. Sonny and Carly believed it was an accident that he got shot, but Ric believed he did it on purpose and that it proved his loyalty to Sonny. But Sonny still refused to let Ric work for him. Angry, Ric formed a silent partnership with Faith. He wanted to destroy Sonny from the inside out. Jason, who had never trusted Ric, wondered if Ric had partnered with Faith. Ric tried to throw them off his track by fabricating evidence to make it look like Jax was Faith's partner. Jason didn't buy it, so he set up a trap for Faith to tell them who her partner was. Before she could, Ric shot her and when she didn't die threatened to finish her off if she gave him up.
Carly had found out that she was pregnant. Fearing that the baby could be Ric's, she had a paternity test done and was relieved that the baby was Sonny's. She told Sonny about the night she spent with Ric and the fact that she found out that she was drugged. Sonny believed her and wanted to kill Ric. Sonny captured Ric and asked him why he wanted to ruin Sonny so bad, but Ric escaped before Sonny got his answer. Ric then kidnapped Courtney and told Sonny to meet him at the vacation home in Martha's Vineyard from Sonny's childhood. While there Ric finally revealed that he was Sonny's half-brother and that he blamed Sonny for their mother choosing Sonny over a life with Ric and Ric's father. Ric also stated that he never laid a hand on Carly. Sonny decided he couldn't shoot Ric for his mother's sake.
When Carly discovered that Sonny didn't shoot Ric, she decided to do it herself. But Sonny showed up in time to stop her. Ric then used evidence he fabricated that incriminated Jason for Fowler's murder to try to blackmail Sonny's sister Courtney into marrying him. By this time, Ric had fallen for Elizabeth Webber and she for him, but the taste of revenge was too huge for Ric to let go of. Liz was devastated when she learned Ric intended to marry Courtney. But Jason and Courtney set Ric up and managed to get rid of the fabricated evidence.
Elizabeth found out what Ric did to Carly and that he kidnapped Courtney all to get to Sonny so she rejected him. Then she found out that she was pregnant. Before she could have an abortion, Ric showed up and begged her forgiveness. She blurted out that she's pregnant and he said they could be happy together as a family. She gave in to him and they had a quickly wedding with a Justice of the Peace. Ric also called a truce with Sonny.
Faith became obsessed with Ric and didn't think Elizabeth deserved him. To stir up Ric's emotions about Sonny, Faith pushed a pregnant Elizabeth down a flight of stairs after she had a meeting with Sonny. Elizabeth miscarried and a distraught Ric blamed Sonny, believing he was the one who pushed Elizabeth.
Outwardly for Elizabeth's sake, Ric continued his truce with Sonny while he plotted to take Sonny's new baby to replace the one Elizabeth lost. Ric bought a house with a secret Panic Room in it. He kidnapped Carly in front of her son Michael and kept her in the room chained to a wall. She tried to escape a few times, but Ric was able to thwart her attempts. Carly then resorted to mind games, taunting Ric that Sonny would kill him or Elizabeth would leave him when she found out. Sonny didn't believe that Ric had Carly, but Jason did especially when Michael said that he saw Ric take Carly.
Lorenzo Alcazar figured out that Ric took Carly and became Ric's partner against Sonny. He helped Ric by planting evidence to make it look like Carly was taken to South America. Elizabeth wanted a new baby right away, but Ric had become so obsessed with taking Carly's baby once it's born, that he paid off a doctor to tell Elizabeth that she couldn't conceive. When Elizabeth got a second opinion that said she could have a baby, Ric crushed up birth control pills and put them in Elizabeth's food. One day Elizabeth discovered the button that opened the door to the Panic Room, and was shocked when she saw Carly inside. Before Elizabeth could get help, she passed out. Ric discovered what happened, put Carly back in the room, and got Elizabeth to the hospital. The pills he'd been giving her caused a blood clot that nearly killed her. Ric nearly killed Elizabeth to keep her from telling the cops about Carly, but at the last minute had feelings of remorse and decided to let Carly go instead. Elizabeth woke up and remembered seeing Carly. She called the cops and turned Ric in. Before Sonny was able to come get Carly, Lorenzo's men knocked out Ric and took Carly.
Ric became determined to redeem himself in Elizabeth's eyes by helping Sonny find Carly. He convinced Sonny not to kill him yet because he knew the layout of Alcazar's South American compound and could help him get in past the security. When Sonny and Jason did finally manage to rescue Carly, Ric went along and sacrificed himself to give them a chance to escape a hail of gunfire from Alcazar's men. Ric nearly died before Jason rescued him and brought him back to Port Charles to help get Courtney away from Alcazar. After Elizabeth refused to believe that he was trying to turn his life around for her, Ric tried to get Dr. Lewis to help him set up an insanity defense, but the doctor refused. Later Scott offered to drop the charges against Ric if Ric agreed to be the bait to trick Sonny into a making a move to kill him so that Scott could put Sonny in prison. Left with no real choice, Ric agreed. Soon after, Elizabeth served Ric with divorce papers and declared their relationship over.
But Ric still cared about Elizabeth. Given a new lease on life, Ric set about trying to win back Elizabeth's heart. When she was run down in the street and left temporarily blind, Ric was initially the main suspect. After he was cleared, he was by her side during her recovery. Wanting to impress Elizabeth, Ric forced Scott to make him the Assistant District Attorney. Slowly, Elizabeth allowed Ric back into her life. But after a fight with Ric, she slept with Zander to make herself look disgusting to Ric. However, Ric still wanted to be with her and they even went on a romantic getaway to a cabin in the woods.
Elizabeth's one-night stand with Zander resulted in a baby which Ric initially believed to be his. The happy couple remarried in a private ceremony. However, Ric was suspicious of the baby's actual parentage and managed to coax the truth from Elizabeth. Together they confronted Zander and asked him to sign away his parental rights so that Ric and Elizabeth could have a family with the new baby. But Zander decided to use his position to blackmail Ric into framing Nikolas for murder. Ric went along with the plan for awhile, but Zander kept demanding more and more from. So Ric turned the tables on him and had Zander arrested for assaulting Nikolas. Zander died a few weeks later in the hotel fire and Elizabeth and Ric felt somewhat relieved. But the nightmare wasn't over. Elizabeth, Ric, Nikolas, and Emily each received a post-mortem letter from Zander claiming that each person's significant other had killed him. The two couples spent the following weeks trying to figure out who had actually killed Zander. Elizabeth finally confessed to confronting Zander in the basement and knocking him out with a pipe right before the fire. Ric was unwilling to let Elizabeth go to prison for murdering Zander and the group got Jason to tell the cops that Capelli admitted to killing Zander before dying himself. Zander turned up alive a few days later and Elizabeth spotted him with Emily in their old cottage. She alerted Ric who brought the cops to arrest him for several recent crimes. The resulting stand-off ended in Zander's death.
Elizabeth and Ric barely had time to be happy before Ric returned to nursing his vendetta against Sonny. Ric was taunting Sonny about being a better father than him when Elizabeth walked in. She demanded to know if he had married her simply to throw it in Sonny's face. Later, Ric confessed to her that he would never be able to give up his vendetta against Sonny and the couple split amicably. Without Elizabeth around to criticize him, Ric pursued his vendetta against Sonny with full force. While digging into Sonny's past, he discovered that Sonny was Kristina's real father. Ric then dared Alexis to go up against him in court, and Alexis found herself taking on Faith as a client. A few weeks later Alexis jumped to Courtney's defense when Ric accused Courtney of setting up her new foundation as a money laundering front for the mob.
While pursuing Alexis, Ric was also trying to find the person who killed Ross Duncan. When he arrested Luke, Lucky called Alexis to be Luke's attorney. Skye later helped Luke escape custody and promptly turned into the prime suspect in Ross's murder. Tracy gave Ric the photos she had of Skye hiding Ross's body and Ric had Skye arrested for murdering Ross and trying to frame Laura for it while making it look like Laura was framing her. Ric finally got Alexis to agree to go out for drinks with him by citing it would help their working relationship. He managed to get her drunk and pump her for info about Sonny. Her hangover the next day nearly caused her to be late to Skye's bail hearing. But Alexis still managed to get Skye out of jail despite Ric's attempt to have Skye held without bail. Later Alexis recalled that she had passionately kissed Ric the night before. They shared another kiss after Courtney's fundraising party and Ric later pretended to have gone to bed with another woman to make Alexis jealous. Due to new evidence in the form of a letter from Luke accusing Skye of setting him up, Ric managed to get Skye held without bail until her trial date a couple of weeks later.
Ric and Alexis shared more semi-friendly banter at Carly's club before witnessing a physical fight between Faith and Carly. Ric threatened to charge Carly with aggravated assault, but Alexis jumped to Carly's defense, citing it was clearly self-defense as witnessed by several people. Ric wasn't happy when Faith refused to press charges. Ric and Alexis were talking in the park later when Elizabeth showed up with her new baby, Cameron. Elizabeth allowed Ric to hold the baby, who quickly calmed down in Ric's arms. Elizabeth also made it clear that getting back together with Ric was a mistake they shouldn't make.
