Brief Character History
By all accounts Johnny was a troubled child who found trouble wherever he went. His father was a ruthless mob boss who was slowly going insane. His obsession was his wife, Maria. Unfortunately, he saw their son Johnny as a rival for her affections and loyalty. During one of Anthony's infamous fits, he raised his gun fully intending to shoot his young son dead. Maria jumped into the path of the bullet and died before her son's eyes. The murder was quickly covered up and Anthony went into seclusion. Johnny became his father's new obsession. He was the last thing he had left of Maria and he refused to share Johnny with anyone. Johnny acted out. He got into trouble and began running away.
One night, he ended up in Port Charles and picking up a hitchhiker. The young woman was Lulu Spencer. Lulu had just had her heart broken when she learned that her boyfriend had cheated on her. Upset and angry, Lulu ended up walking and accepting a ride from a stranger. Johnny and Lulu ended up stranded and took shelter in a barn while people were frantically searching for Lulu. Concern for Lulu mounted as everyone realized whom she had ended up with.
Sonny and Jason were facing a very real threat from the Zacchara family who were intent on wresting control over Port Charles from Sonny. Spearheading the move was none other than Trevor Lansing. The Zacchara family was known to be ruthless, targeting the loved ones of their opposition and murdering them in cold blood. On the night that Johnny picked up Lulu, the Corinthos children's nanny, Leticia, had been murdered in Carly's home. Sonny and Jason were certain that with Johnny being sighted, it was a mob hit that took Leticia's life. When Jason and Spinelli finally caught up with Lulu and Johnny, Johnny proved to be anything but friendly. He pulled a gun on Jason and made it clear that he had no problem shooting him. The timely arrival of his handlers kept the situation from escalating.
Lulu and Johnny remained in contact though. They sent each other text messages and met in private. As their friendship blossomed, things around them began deteriorating. Emily Quartermaine was murdered during a Black & White Gala on Wyndemere. Anthony had escaped his own handlers and terrorized the guests at the ball. He shot Leyla Mir, walked away while Luke Spencer suffered a heart attack, speared Ric Lansing in the shoulder nearly killing him, nearly garroted Nikolas to death, shot Sonny Corinthos and held Liz and Jason hostage, playing his mind games. When Liz and Jason managed to turn the tables, Anthony leaped off the top of a turret and fell to the courtyard. Jason managed to shot him on the way down. Miraculously, Anthony lived but he was paralyzed from the neck down. After a brief stay at General Hospital, Anthony was moved to a facility for the criminally insane. Before he was taken away he had words of advice for his son. He told Johnny use Trevor Lansing to establish his position as head of the family and then kill the man before he kills Johnny.
Johnny was determined to broker a peace with Sonny but Trevor had other ideas. Behind Johnny's back, Trevor arranged for a sniper to kill Sonny. He also arranged for Lulu to receive a note from Johnny to meet him at the piers at a certain time and in a certain location. He wanted Johnny to arrive and for a sniper to make it appear that Sonny's men were gunning from him. Trevor wanted Lulu to be a casualty to bring Johnny in line. Both of Trevor's plans would fail but it did notch up tensions. Sonny knew Trevor was behind the move to kill him but he held Johnny responsible for failing to control the power hungry attorney.
